This is how the Rule of 72 works, you divide the interest rate into 72. That is how many years your money takes to double. As you see if you look at your savings account at 1 percent it would take 72 years to double To calculate the real gains you need to subtract the cost of living from the interest rate. So if the cost of living goes up by 3 percent per year then if you are not making at least 3 percent then you are lossing money
